Anacostia Trails Heritage Area is the non-profit organization that manages the state heritage tourism area in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Our work supports municipalities, business and property owners, and residents and visitors alike by promoting the arts, culture, nature, and history across the region.

ATHA is dedicated to preserving and promoting the historical, artistic, cultural, and natural resources of the stat-certified Heritage Area.

MEETING NOTICE

Bladensburg Battlefield Notice of Public Meeting

The Prince George’s County Historic Preservation Commission will consider the Bladensburg Battlefield (PG: 68-134) for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 2024. The National Register is the Federal Government's official list of properties considered worthy of recognition for their significance in American history and culture. The meeting will be held in-person at the Cheverly Town Hall (6401 Forest Road, Cheverly, MD 20785) beginning at 6:30 pm and virtually. You are most welcome to attend and comment. Should you wish to submit written comments at this time, submit them no later than 5:00 p.m. on October 15, 2024.

WALKING TOUR

Historic Hyattsville Public Art Walking Tour
Join the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area on a new walking tour focusing on public artworks in Historic Downtown Hyattsville. The tour, led by Tantara Person, features a variety of artworks commissioned by nonprofit organizations, private businesses, and local government initiatives. The tour begins at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, one of the major art centers in The Gateway Arts District.

Women’s Suffrage Self-Guided Tours
National leaders of the Women’s Suffrage movement choose Hyattsville, MD as a rally location before delivering more than 75,000 pro-vote signatures to the US. Capital! That’s a feat of grassroots organizing. In Prince George’s County, we highlight 5 sites on a 50-minute bike route primarily via the Trolley Trail.

Civil Rights Sites
The Prince George’s County Civil Rights Trail is a public history project focused on regional sites and stories of the national Civil Rights Movement (1954-1964). Each story details the experiences of Black Marylanders as they fought against segregation and for equality. We recognize that this struggle continues and believe that by illuminating these moments in history, we can increase cultural understanding and inspire acts of reconciliation.

Battle of Bladensburg Audio Tour
The Battle of Bladensburg is an infamous loss in U.S. military history and led to the burning of the Capitol dome in Washington, DC by British forces. To explore the history of the Battle of Bladensburg, we recommend walking or biking the remains of the battlefield starting at Bladensburg Waterfront Park.
